Tiara ~ Senior Golden Barn

Tiara ~ Senior Golden Barn

i must say i have enjoyed working with Tiara and Her Boyfriend Sean's Senior pictures..

Her portfolio has many different looks.. from Urban Brick views and night time strobist stuff, but the barn session we had perfect golden sun light to work with and the back drop of this vintage barn is as good is it gets here in INDIANA..

around 8PM Indiana time now days if the clouds clear right, the yellowish sun just becomes an amazing photographers tool.. so i used it as a second hair rim light source and composed this shot..

took me about 10 shots to get this.. and her expression was just perfect..

here i used the AB1600 with a 64 PLM boomed camera right ..

let me know what you think of this one..

Tiara and i rocked the lens with this simple blue gel set up.

her senior portfolio will have sunny and night time shots..

to me night time is very easy to do because the lighting is so controlled.. like a studio.. but outdoors..

we had many people walk by and respectfully watch us work..

lighting here was a 430 EX with a blue gel and a shoot thru umbrella...

and for the main light 580EXII in a westcott 28x28 all in manual mode.. camera right..

Tiara and i rocked the lens today on a friends farm.. (Thanks Heather !..)

here we found a perfect natural frame to work with..

the textures and opening gave us this cool pose for Tiara..

why this shot works, is because the natural golden sun light from be hind and blending in that with just the right amount of fill.. i had to take about 6 shots before i got the the settings i wanted..

Sean ~ Senior Sun Play

Probably my signature shooting style, either it is with the sun or the sun sets..

here i shot this cool senior in a parking lot.. so simple but so easy..

what makes it cool is the sun play of course..

i couldn't do this shot if i didn't have an understanding about off camera lighting..

i used 2 speed lights in a shoot thru umbrella for this shot.
this was when i was using my pocket wizard flex flex combo..

i have recently purchased radio poppers for the same thing..

i love lighting and i love lighting systems..

if you make lighting important to your shooting style i think that will set you apart from other photographers..

Aurielle ~ The Beauty of Spring

Aurielle ~ The Beauty of Spring

This is a continuation of my 4 Seasons series
i had done the winter photo and now the SPRING..
Model is a bride to be this year, Aurielle is to going to marry her high school sweet heart, who happens to be pitching for the L.A. Dodgers(MLB) team maybe you have heard of them, and i was lucky enough to be their wedding photographer
with Aurielle's stunning beauty it was a natural choice to use her for the Spring photo.
the hardest part was coming up with my own original concept and not to copy anybody else's..
i also called on my good friend Ryan O Hicks for support to come out if there were any thing he can help with he would gladly help. (Thanks Ryan..!)
this shot was some what complex in concept.
i wanted motion in all my 4 Season Series Shots and this was the challenge.
Create something beautiful, something with motion, do it not in a studio, and in a place where all photogs probably started out in.. a parking garage..
Being this was such a large production, we had Mother, Father, Brother and GF helping.
Timing was the challenge, getting every body on sycn including me.. it took about 12 shots to get the job done.
lighting was a 4 light set up.

1. Key light was AB 1600 @ 1/3 power with PLM 64 as a light mod
2. 2 Speedlights 580 EXII at full power as side kicker each in a shoot thru umbrella
3. one 550 EX in a 28 inch westcott with green gel for the wall background.
Model and Beth (mother) went to flower store 2 hours before to pick out the colors and then from there were created the outfit and lipstick followed.
set up shot is here credit to Ryan Hicks
set video is here credit to Ryan Hicks Set Up Video
thanks goes out to Aurielle, Mother, Father, Brother, GF, and Ryan.. i could not have done this with out your help and multiple takes..

Ryan and Tabby ~ Their Moment

i had a chance to work with this wonderful young couple.

Ryan and Tabby so sweet on each other..

my photography experience has lead me to this style of photography.

work on good light, comp, and most importantly, create their moment for the subject.

as i have stated before, it is important to feel comfortable infront of the camera, and how you the photog do that is this:

have them sit and talk to each other and have them holding hands and such.. always catch them kissing, but only just before the kiss.. that is the best moment.. and this is theirs..

works eh?

probably one of the more wild color night i have captured in the fields

mother was very happy with all the shots.. this one stood out as being unique for a photographers eye and composition.

i used a 86 PLM with the AB1600 at the lowest power. camera right about 8 feet away

the 86 PLM is so large that i could have had the light source away from the subject as far as 16 feet and the light would have looked soft..

using it out doors is a risk.. it is so big and becomes a kite in any wind..

Caryn and Bob will be married this year.. this young couple have been friends for over 15 some years, and now they will be friends forever !..

Couples photography challenges me to make a photo that is dreamy and well composed... but with real people who might not be comfortable in front of the lens..

that is where you the photog must learn to create a photo that looks natural.

my tips are:

have them sit down.. and talk to each other, laugh, and smile, and all the time kiss !

here is what we did and the results are jaw dropping to me..

Tori Senior ~ Can You Take it Higher

Tori Senior ~ Can You Take it Higher

another senior shoot. this time with Tori.. she was my representative for my photography last year.

this was my first time working with tori, a cheerleader in her high school.. thus her leaping is so amazing..

i lighted this with a speed light in a westcott 28 inch softbox.. it produces amazing light.. why is it so good?

it is 28 x 28.. so it is a large light source
it has side control barn like doors.. it focuses the light to where you want and doesn't spray

cons.. it isn't durable.. so if i break one, will i buy another one? yes ! it is worth it for me..
another con is it is difficult to work with. if you need to change the light power, you have to open it up to change your settings.. oh well get it right the first time and don't worry about it. he he..

also this was when i was learning off camera flash in full manual..

i am telling you it was the best thing i could have ever done.. learn off camera flash in manual.

now i have knowledge to shape the light the way i want in most situations, a speed light will work..

by working with tori on multiple shoots, i was able to gain the surrounding high schools attention with my photography and i had more clients..

So i do lots of senior photos for 4 high schools here in my surrounding community.

Senior photography is so fun for me, i get a chance to customize a photo for the student.

it is slower paced photography, less stressful and rewarding because the student is getting a custom photo that is taylored to their needs.

this series is inspired by a great russian photographer Oleg Igorin... he is the man ! and i say he has gained my attention as an industry standard.

this shot was done in a parking garage with 3 speed lights.. and a single alien bee strobe AB1600..

i had the glitter cross lighted by 2 speedlights gelled with blue and green.. the green wasn't showing up too well..

anyways.. it is a project i have been thinking of doing for awhile and hadn't had a chance.. but last night presented it self..

1 speed light in the rear and a shoot thru for the wall and partial side lighting

2 speed lights for the cross lighting..

1 AB 1600 for the key light 64PLM was used.

all speed lights were full power

let them know that any goes.. show some energy and have fun..

i set up the shot with them in the back of the parking lot.. in formation, and i had them look away from the camera.. and told them to walk and be fun and expressive.. (i was in servo Auto Focus) and took about 10 snaps of this walking sequences..

and Bam i got this awesome Mafia Wedding Shot !

see walking just puts people in super natural position...

Toby and Sara ~ Together Forever

Toby and Sara ~ Together Forever

I have done many weddings recently.

and found it is very important to have the couple walking together to get a dramatic shot.

walking does two things.

1. makes photos look natural
2. allows the couple to display their true emotions and not faked posing.

keep in mind, less than 1 percent of people are comfortable infront of the camera, so do yourself a favor and have them walk.. and you the photog.. circle them to get your amazing shot..

here is my fav from this wedding of the TOBY and SARAH..

"Remember that happiness is a way of travel, and Love is their destination."

All natural light..

Cassie ~ Wedding Shot ~ Middle of the Isle

Cassie ~ Wedding Shot ~ Middle of the Isle

this is cassie, a happy bride that i worked with during her special day.

Weddings go by so fast, that i have some shots that i always do..

here is my take on a bride shot in her beautiful church.

this type of shot is not typical for most and i always try to do at least this one because it is so unique.

1. the perspective of the rows of pews
2. the view of the altar of which she will be saying her vows soon..
3. just different from most shots in a church.

so for young lovers i have a quote

"Trip over love, you can get up. Fall in love and you fall forever."

Tips on working with couples and how to make photos look natural.

what i have found is not to pose the couples..

sure i have some that i use, but here i just had Jordan and Lindsey sit down and i had them just talk to each other, and laugh, kiss and do what ever then wanted, and i just lined up the sun just outside of the frame and got this magical shot..

Corrina's senior photo.

done in the flower fields during the fall

one of my favorite fields shots to date..

just so colorful and the golden late sun..

i had a red gel on speed light for rear hair light..

from the alzo digital site

" This outdoors shot combines evening light with light from a flash. These soft lighting conditions occurred at around 7:30 p.m. in Indiana in mid-September just before sunset. A single side/back light flash was used to create the hair highlight on the right side of the subject. The sunset was to the left of subject.
Setup: The ALZO ultralight softbox kit was aimed at the right side of the subject's head with a red gel taped to the flash. The remote flash was triggered with the ALZO wireless flash trigger kit.

Camera settings: Aperture 5.6, shutter speed was 1/160 sec on a mono pod, ISO= 500. Canon 580 ex II flash was set to manual @ 1/64 power, no on-camera flash."

working with couples is really hard for some.. and really easy for others..

what i have found is this:

put the couple sitting..

ask them to talk to each other.. make them laugh.. kiss, touch.. etc.. and you the photog.. be taking the photos the whole time..

and wham.. you get a frame like this one..

Love is like heaven, but it can hurt like hell.

i work with my seniors on many mini shoots.. this was her winter session..

i always say to them it will only take about 10 mins to do the shots.. but it turns out to be 30 mins or more, because i continue to shoot.

i need to stop having so much fun and respect others time.. lol..

we used a reflector on this shot..
